Trojans string together effort to finish third at Charles City Invitational

New Kent’s Zach Ford ran a time of 53.06 in the 400 meter dash while teammate Holden Minor crossed the finish line in the 3200 meter run in a time of 10:48.60 as both athletes earned first place finishes to propel the Trojans to a third place finish in last Saturday’s Charles City Invitational.

New Kent finished with 69 points, good enough for third place out of 17 teams at the meet. Bay Rivers District rival Warhill won the meet with 95 points, while Meadowbrook finished in second with 73.5 points. Host Charles City scored 13.5 points, good enough for a 12th place finish.

On the girls’ side, New Kent’s Caitlin McClain was a double winner, claiming first place in the shot and discus. Her toss of 34’7” in the shot and 111’7½” in the discus was not only good enough to take the spot, but also qualified her automatically for the group 3A state track and field championships in June.

New Kent’s girls tallied 31 points, good enough for a sixth place finish at the invitational. Host Charles City scored three points to earn 14th place at the meet. Warhill’s girls won the meet with 137 points.
