A flat start combined with the inability to return serves were downfalls in Charles City Lady Panthers loss to visiting West Point Tuesday night.

The Lady Pointers posted scores of 25-8, 25-8, and 25-12 to take the Tidewater District contest.

Not helping the hosts was a flat start at the beginning of the match. With the score knotted at six apiece in the first set, West Point orchestrated a 19-2 run behind the serving of Kylee Suedo and Brooke South. South accounted for a six-point scoring spree and Suedo finished off the set with nine straight points of her own.

Charles City failed to muster any offensive attack on the night. In set two the Lady Panthers fell behind 14-3 before succumbing to an identical score that matched the first set. In the final frame, West Point pulled away with a combination of serves from South and spikes from outside hitter Tatyana Harris.

The Lady Panthers’ struggles continued, but the frustration presented by head coach James Raj summed up the feeling of the atmosphere in the contest.

“I thought we would play better than what we did,” he said. “In the second game, we lost a lot of coordination and communication in finding the ball.

“We have to put more effort into the game and need to put more effort into practice,” Raj concluded.

Charles City drops to 1-8 on the season.
