After raising their performance to a higher level two nights earlier against a quality foe, New Kent’s Lady Trojans took a downhill slide Thursday night with Warhill’s Lions providing the opposition.

Shots refused to fall for the host Lady Trojans, both from the floor and charity stripe. The team that put up 59 points on Smithfield could manage a mere nine in the first half and 13 through three quarters. In the end, the hosts fell for the 19th time without a win this season to the tune of 58-23.

“I’m extremely disappointed, and I know they’re disappointed,” Lady Trojan coach Vann Baker said concerning her squad following the Senior Night clash.

“If we’d made our shots, it would have been a lot closer, but the shots wouldn’t drop,” she said.

New Kent sank just four of 31 shots from the floor and single free throw in falling behind 32-9 at the half. As a team, they never reached double figures until Deysha Goodlet scored in the paint with 2:29 left in the third quarter.

“They’re disappointed in themselves and ready for a win,” Baker said. “They put in a lot of effort and work hard. I’m frustrated and I’m running out of my bag of tricks.”

Goodlet finished with a team-high nine points while Kayla Davis totaled five. Peyton Slater and Kelsey Yates scored five each and Nakesha Glover contributed one.

“This is a good group of girls and they don’t give up,” Baker said. “It would be easy to give up and walk away, but it’s hard to have the patience to stay in there and win one.”
