Over a 10-minute span — the final six minutes of the first half and initial four of the second — Jamestown’s Eagles took five shots on goal, scoring on four. That was more than enough for the visitors to turn back a determined New Kent Lady Trojan team by a 5-0 count.

“[Jamestown] went 35 minutes without scoring, and that was huge for us,” Lady Trojan coach Irene Bierie said after Monday night’s soccer battle.

“We really stepped up our play, but our focus is tomorrow night when we take on Grafton,” she said. “We’re not a second half team, but we played well and gave it 100 percent.”

Both teams had opportunities to move in front during the 35-minute first half stalemate. Eagle keeper Juliette Sim stopped shots fired by New Kent’s Hannah Gilland and Jhonae White. Also, Sydney Griffith and Faith Tyler shots sailed high and wide while a pair of Kristen Taylor direct free kicks hooked wide. Lady Trojan keeper Sara Buchanan, meanwhile, managed four saves.

But just inside six minutes to go, Jamestown’s Sofie Fox capitalized on a breakaway situation, ripping a shot past a charging Buchanan. With two minutes left, Fox scored again, putting the visitors up 2-0 at halftime.

Less than a minute into the second half, the Eagles added their third goal. Four minutes in, the advantage reached 4-0. New Kent never got off a shot during the Eagles’ 10-minute surge.

“Jamestown is a better passing team, and that gave us problems,” said Bierie, whose team is now 4-4.

Jamestown held a 30-8 edge in shots. Buchanan finished with 10 saves before giving way to Talia Hohman, who recorded one over the game’s waning minutes.
