Second inning fireworks, Metheny pitching key New Kent 6-2 win

New Kent pitcher Mitchell Metheny got off to a shaky start. Poquoson’s visiting Islanders touched the Trojan starter for back-to-back RBI singles for a 2-0 first inning lead.

But Metheny allowed just two hits thereafter in going the distance, and Trojan bats took care of the rest. The hosts scored all of their runs in the second inning on the way to a 6-2 Monday afternoon baseball triumph, avenging an earlier loss at the hands of the Islanders.

“[Metheny] settled down and pitched a great game,” said Trojan coach Michael Kuper. “He took control of the game and had real good stuff today.

“There was lots of good defense behind him,” the coach added. “We brought our gloves today, and we had that one big inning where we really put a lot of pressure on them.”

The hosts took advantage of five hits and three walks in the six-run second frame. Shawn Cousins led off with a single followed by a walk issued to Brennan Gray, singles from Jacob Stout, Bryan Brooks, and Steven Carpenter, and walks by Jared Mitchell and Christian Hamby.

Cousins, up for the second time in the frame, cracked a two-run double to climax the uprising. For the game, he went three-for-four with two doubles and a single, driving in two runs.

“[Cousins] has been hitting the ball real well for us this year,” Kuper said.

Metheny, meanwhile, finished with six strikeouts while walking one.

“This is our fourth win in a row,” said Kuper, noting his team improved to 10-7. “This was a big win for us because [Poquoson] is in our conference.”
