Vaulting to success again

Rising New Kent senior Griffin Kowal (left) is congratulated by superintendent Dave Myers (right) at the Aug. 8 school board meeting as he won the boys’ pole vault at the Group 3A State Championships in June at Harrisonburg High School. Kowal cleared a height of 15’0” and achieved a rare feat by winning both the indoor and outdoor state competitions in the same year. He also recorded the highest clearance in the event this year in the state of Virginia at 15’7”.
