Lady Trojans stun Jamestown with 1-0 overtime triumph
Hannah Gilland’s late goal in overtime broke a scoreless deadlock and lifted New Kent’s host Lady Trojans to a 1-0 sudden death overtime field hockey victory over Jamestown’s Eagles.
“This definitely was a good win for us. It’s the first time we’ve beaten Jamestown,” said Lady Trojan coach Matt Duckworth, whose team improved to 5-4 overall and 2-3 against Bay Rivers District foes with Monday night’s win.
The key to the historic triumph: “Just being relentless,” Duckworth said.
“Even though we gave up more shots and more penalty corner opportunities, we were relentless,” he said. “Playing hard has been kind of the focus for us.”
Defense dominated the contest. Jamestown got off only four shots despite eight penalty corners. New Kent, meanwhile, managed just two shots and an equal number of corners, but the Lady Trojans made their second and final shot count.
Jamestown had its chances in overtime with shots off a pair of corner situations. New Kent keeper Brooke Forsythe stopped one while the other sailed wide.
But as time ticked down toward the five-minute mark during the 15-minute overtime period, Lady Trojan Peyton Slater cleared the ball out of the hosts’ end of the field and in the direction of teammate Marley McCartney who had slipped behind Eagle defenders. McCartney drove the ball toward the Eagle goal, lofting a high pass to Gilland who hammered in the decisive goal.
