During a span of just over three minutes early in the opening half, Poquoson’s Islanders scored three goals, assuming command that they would never relinquish in Monday’s field hockey match at New Kent. The host Lady Trojans, meanwhile, could get off a shot in falling 6-0.
“We weren’t ready for their speed,” said Lady Trojan coach Matt Duckworth, whose team dropped to 2-2 in conference play and 5-7 overall. “And there were a lot of little things like not getting first touch on the ball.
“First touch is everything,” he added. “It was taking us two touches to get anything going.”
Poquoson jumped on top at the 25:42 mark of the first half on the first of three goals on the night from Caitlin Bain. Two minutes later, the lead reached 2-0. And a minute after that Bain’s second goal made it 3-0. Two Margaret Chiappazzi scores opened a 5-0 halftime advantage.
The Islanders fired 14 shots at the New Kent goal. Lady Trojan keeper Darla Johnson stopped four in the first half. Taking over in goal after the break, Brooke Forsythe recorded two saves.
