“We couldn’t make the simple plays.”

That statement by returning Charles City baseball coach Irving Bradby summed up the Panthers 16-0 loss to Mathews Monday afternoon.

For the first two innings, the host Panthers held Mathews explosive offense in check. As they entered the top of the third trailing 4-0, two back-to-back errors opened the floodgates for the visiting Blue Devils.

A miscue on a pop fly by second baseman Dwayne Ghee and a ground ball misplayed by third baseman Andre’ Mason allowed three runs to cross the plate. Pitcher Brian Menefee’s attempt to halt the rally fell short, as a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch bestowed a 9-0 lead to the guest. A single by James Hunley gave Mathews a double-digit lead to exit the inning.

The Panthers offense never got going, as only two runners reached second base in the contest. Meanwhile, three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings provided enough distance to end the game via the slaughter rule.

Bradby added comments that while his team is young, correctable mistakes are necessary in order for the team to win.

“We just have to do the little things right and that will make a difference,” the coach said. “Being ready to field the ball and playing in the right position can change the outcome of the game.”

Charles City remains winless on the year, posting a record of 0-3.
