Early scores help lift Poquoson over New Kent
Two goals during the first 10 minutes of play proved to be more than enough to propel Poquoson’s Islanders toward a soccer victory over New Kent. The host Trojans had opportunities to get back in Monday night’s contest, but to no avail. Poquoson went on to add another pair of goals in the second half on the way to a 4-0 win, dropping the hosts to 3-10.
“We had some good stuff going at times, and we almost capitalized on a couple of shots,” said Trojan coach Keith Grant.
His team settled down after the initial onslaught, but an open shot off the foot of Cameron Cobb sailed over the Islander goal and Josue Benitez’s free kick just before intermission was hauled in by Islander keeper Shane Scott.
Fortunately for New Kent, the halftime deficit was not worse. An offsides violation nullified an Islander score while two other shots caromed off the top of the Trojan goal. Defender Harrison Hunt blocked another shot, taking away an open net opportunity from the visitors.
But the Islanders stretched their advantage early in the second half when Andrew Wheeler’s shot scooted under the save attempt by Trojan keeper Billy John. John, however, went on to record six saves.
