New Kent track teams dominate on way to clinching Conference 25 track crowns

New Kent's track teams celebrate with their championship trophies following Wednesday's sweep of the 3A Conference 25 meet. Buoyed by strong performances in the field events, New Kent teams raced away from the competition to capture the boys’ and girls’ titles in Wednesday’s 3A Conference 25 championships on their home facilities.

The Lady Trojans amassed 148 points to easily outdistance runner-up Warhill’s 96. Poquoson took third with 69 followed by Southampton (68), Park View (65), and Colonial Heights (7).

On the boys’ side, New Kent more than doubled the point total of their nearest competitor with 193 points. Park View finished second with 89 followed by Warhill (74), Poquoson (73), Southampton (58), and Colonial Heights (34).

Raven Harris emerged as a double individual event winner for the Lady Trojans, leaping 16 feet, 7 inches to take long jump and covering 34-11.5 for first in triple jump. She also placed second in high jump (4-8) and third at 200 meters (28.42).

Lady Trojan Kayla Tirado prevailed in shot put with a heave of 30-5.5. Teammate Justine Eckert easily captured discus with a toss of 95-1. The hosts posted 1-2-3 finishes in long jump and discus.

The Trojans, meanwhile, won five events led by Griffin Kowal’s meet record breaking 15-foot clearance in pole vault. C.J. Readers lead a Trojan 1-2-3 finish in triple jump with a leap of 41-10. Kyle Coles won the 110-meter hurdles by one-hundredth of a second in 16.12, Evan Branch edged the field in 11.37 to win at 100 meters, and Jon Swartout broke contact with the pack on the second lap to cruise to an 11:07.38 win at 3200 meters.
