Panthers win three events, finish fourth in Conference 42 championships

Charles City’s Royal Washington and Mason Jefferson emerged as individual winners while the boys’ 4×100 meter relay team also claimed top billing as the Panthers finished fourth in the Conference 42 Track & Field Championships on May 18.

Washington heaved the shot put 40’8”, claiming first in the field event. Jefferson cruised to a season best time of 11.55 in the 100-meter dash, finishing as one of four Panthers to qualify in the regional event. The 4×100 relay team of Cameron Vaden, Kyle Jones, Robert Dobson, and Troy Crawley orchestrated a time of 44.55 to outdistance the competition.

Charles City accumulated 67 points, placing them just behind third place Middlesex (73). Cumberland won the boys division with 135 points and was trailed closely by Mathews (126). West Point (46), King & Queen (24), and Central Lunenburg (21) rounded out the scoring.

On the girls’ side, the two-person team of Laina Brown and Aysia Wallace will advance to regional competition. The two ladies scored 10 points, good enough for a sixth-place finish. Middlesex claimed the women’s team title with 123 points, followed by Mathews (109.5), Cumberland (106), West Point (98.5) and Central Lunenburg (36). King and Queen finished behind the hosts Lady Panthers with six.
