Sometimes a strong start leads to a strong finish.

That is what happened as New Kent’s dominance overwhelmed the visiting York Lady Falcons 25-13, 25-11, 25-19 in the Sept. 21 Bay Rivers’ volleyball match.

The hosts started quickly, dominating the serving game with four aces in the first set to claim in. In set two, a mixture of aggressive kills and timely digs would lead to another victory.

In the third set, York managed to stay competitive, trailing New Kent by a mere point (10-9) before Lady Trojan head coach called a timeout. After advising her squad not to lose focus against a winless team, New Kent pulled away to the straight set sweep.

After the contest, Burnett spoke about learning from mental mistakes and prepping for stiffer competition in the upcoming week.

“We had five unforced errors in a row,” she said. “We weren’t setting correctly and were not in the positions we were supposed to be in.

“We must get quicker on offense and defense,” Burnett added, pointing to a matchup against Warhill. “We have to find the strike zone and have our setters set up for our hitters for better kills for the rest of the season.

As a team, New Kent (9-4) combined for 25 kills and 19 aces.
