New Kent’s Lady Trojans used strong serving and aces to complete a straight set sweep 25-13, 25-10, 25-17 of the visiting Smithfield Lady Packers during the Oct. 19 volleyball matchup.

New Kent startled the visitors in the opening set. The Lady Trojans converted 10 aces in the opening frame, with five courtesy of senior Jada Evans. Sets two and three followed suit, as several hard kills rattled the visitors the entire match.

Lady Trojan head coach Cynthia Burnett also employed a new offense that she calls “tandem”, using two players to decoy an opposing player while a third hits the ball.

Burnett commented after the game that her team had an extra fire tonight.

“We have grown and we needed to play New Kent ball all the time,” the victorious coach said. “It doesn’t matter who the opponent is.

“This game and the next game are basically tune-ups before Senior Night,” Burnett added, mentioning a clash against state participant Warhill on Oct. 26. “We want to send our seniors out the right way in their last regular season game.”

New Kent (14-7) garnered 26 kills and 23 aces as a team.
