New Kent finishes fifth at Group 3A State wrestling championships

New Kent High School’s wrestling team earned a fifth-place finish in the Group 3A State Championship in a two-day meet held Feb. 16-17.

The Trojans scored 102.5 points in the affair, with powerhouse Christianburg easily claimng the title once again with 258 points. Also finishing ahead of New Kent was Warren County (137), Cave Spring (135.5), and Staunton River (111).

Trent Ragland claimed the 220-pound division in the state championships. He accumulated pinfalls over Connor Sides (Brentsville), Damontre Saunders (Liberty-Bedford), and Nathan Johnson (Warren County), before defeating Andy Smith of Christianburg via an ultimate tiebreaker 4-2.

Other Trojans who earned place finishes were Brayden Hohman (106 pounds-3rd), Gannon Jones (128 pounds-3rd), Shane Weimer (126 pounds-6th), James Taylor (170 pounds-6th), and Jason Godbey (195 pounds-6th)

New Kent wrestlers who also participated include Raymond Goode, Troy Eberhard, Leighton Fessman, Chris Wade, Brandon Bauman, Charles Gray, and Jamar Christian.
