Lady Trojans’ swim and dive team earn top ten finish at state championships
New Kent High School girls’ swim and diving team earned a top ten finish at the Group 3A State Championships on Feb. 16.
The Lady Trojans accumulated 108 points, good enough to finish ninth in the contest. Bay Rivers District rival York claimed the team title with 352 points.
Alexis Mills earned a second-place finish in the girls’ one-meter dive competition with a score of 457.85.
The team of Emily Montecalvo, Jasmine Cazares, Zorey Sargent, and Morgan Bowman finished eighth in both the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.30) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:45.90). In the girls’ 100-yard butterfly, Sargent finished fourth with a time of 58.68 while Bowman finished 11th by clocking 1:00.92. Cazares finished 16th in the 50-yard freestyle (26.94) while Sargent added a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (54.34). Bowman finished seventh in the girls 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:34.73.
On the boys’ side, New Kent scored 44 points, good enough to finish 13th in the field. Western Albermarle claimed the team title with 467.5 points.
James Coleson finished 16th in the boys 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.84 and 12th in the 100-yard backstroke by finishing in 59.41. Blaine Williams earned a 15th place finish in the boys 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.02. Coleson and Williams were joined by Jack Shaffar and Kevin Kurek in the boys’ 200-meter freestyle relay, finishing in eighth with a time of 1:37.56. The quartet posted a time of 3:43.25 in the 400-yard freestyle, good enough for tenth-place recognition.
