New Kent boys finish tenth at Group 3A indoor state track meet
New Kent’s boys’ indoor track team accumulated 23 points, finishing 10th at the Group 3A Indoor State Track & Field championship meet on Feb. 23-24.
Will Tolley’s clearance of 11’6” in the pole vault earned him a fourth-place finish. Evan Branch placed sixth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.67, Mozay Kalo finished sixth in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:08.76, while Michael Gatling tossed 42’½” in the shot and placed eighth in the 55-meter hurdles by running 8.31. New Kent’s 4×200 relay consisting of Branch, Kalo, Gatling, and Lamont Brandon ran 1:36.24, earning a sixth-place finish, while the 4×400 relay team with Kalo, Gatlin, Joseph Campbell, and Augustine Gilbride ran 3:36.53 to finish fifth. The 4×800 meter relay team of Patrick Johnson, Yuri Frazier, Jordan Hathaway, and Alan Walker ran 8:38.94 to finish seventh.
On the girls’ side, New Kent scored 2.5 points to finish 24th at the state competition. Raven Harris accounted for all of the Lady Trojans points, finishing in a tie for sixth place in the girls’ high jump with a clearance of 5’0”.
Western Albermarle claimed both the boys’ and girls’ titles at the state championship meet with 70 and 92.5 points, respectively.
