Brandon’s seven RBIs propels New Kent to crushing victory over Bruton

Sometimes the best way to bounce back from a tough loss is with a statement performance. Apparently New Kent’s Lamont Brandon got that message loud and clear.
Brandon accounted for seven RBIs as the Trojans trounced Bruton 22-2 in the Bay Rivers opening contest for both squads Friday afternoon.
Brandon’s bunt in the first advanced teammate Jacob Rivera around the bases. Bruton errors coupled with a couple of Brandon steals provided a 2-0 lead for New Kent. Later in the inning, Ty Boyette added two more RBIs, driving in Nick Sorenson and Riggs Ellis. Chris Wade stole home to up the Trojan lead to 5-0 as the Trojans remained on offense in the first.
New Kent batted around when Brandon adding a double. Jacob Stout drove his teammate home with a triple as New Kent saw nine players cross home plate in the first. Five more additional runs in the second and the contest became a runaway for the hosts.
After the contest, Trojans head coach Michael Kuper talked about his team’s effort in the impressive home opener.
“We came out and pitched well tonight and we played offense the way we were supposed to,” he said. “The first inning was a big test for us and we had some adversity and we were able to deal with it.
“The offense was hot tonight and we ran the bases well,” Kuper added. “We made intelligent decisions at the plate and that was big because every out is critical in this game and this district.”
New Kent earns win number one on the year, upping their record to 1-1.
