New Kent comes out on top at “Shoot the Gun and Run” Invitational
New Kent’s Kyle Coles, Michael Gatling, and the boys’ 4×400 meter relay team emerged as event winners to lead the host Trojans to a team title at the 6th annual “Shoot the Gun and Run” Invitational at New Kent High School on Mar. 17.
The Trojans scored 126.16 points to claim the team championship, outdistancing Bay Rivers foe Lafayette who finished as runner-up with 84 and J.R. Tucker’s 60, placing them in third. Charles City scored two points, good enough for 18th at the meet.
Coles leaped 19’8” to win the long jump event, while Gatling emerged with a career best 41’7½” in the triple jump to finish first. The Trojans 4×400 relay team ran 3:42.26, edging out Varina to win the event.
On the girls’ side, Lady Trojan Raven Harris earned a trio of top five finishes to power New Kent to an eighth-place finish.
Harris earned fourth place finishes in the high jump (4’10”) and long jump (15’7”) and added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump (34’4½”).
The Lady Trojans scored 34.5 points in the meet. J.R. Tucker won the girls’ division with 101 points. Charles City scored five points to finish 17th in the competition.
