Growing up and graduating as classmates as part of New Kent High School’s Class of 2010, Lady Trojan head coach Maria Bates and Maury Lady Commodores head coach Nikki Jones friendship bloomed in the classroom and on the athletic field. Eight years later, their friendship would have to take a backseat for a couple hours as the two led programs onto the softball field Monday afternoon.

Despite attempted distractions from Maury’s dugout, it was all bark and no bite as the host Lady Trojans cruised to a 10-0 victory in the five-inning contest.

New Kent emerged quickly after coming to bat. Taylor Yates based hit was followed by Taylor Goode’s bunt. Peyton Slater’s double into the outfield drove in the first run of the contest. Goode would score on a fielder’s choice as the Lady Trojans pushed four across the plate in the bottom of the first.

The pitching and defense for the hosts wasn’t bad either. Only allowing two base runners on errors and giving up only two base hits, Maury failed to muster any offense. Meanwhile, the hosts added six runs over the course of the contest to earn the victory.

Afterwards, Bates talked about her team’s dominant win that improved the squad’s record to 3-0.

“We came out hot today and we have been in the groove early this season,” she said. “Communication has been great on offense and defense.

“I really contribute that to us having a lot of the same players back this year,” Bates continued. “The players really have a strong softball IQ.”
