For a youthful squad like New Kent Lady Trojans’ volleyball team, the best way to get back on track is building confidence. That is what happened during Tuesday night’s encounter against a winless Smithfield Lady Packers.

New Kent swept Smithfield 25-13, 25-16, and 25-13 to raise their record to 5-6 on the season.

The Lady Trojans came out sluggish in the first set, going down 0-4. But the momentum began to swing in favor for the host, using a combination on digs and power at the net to take advantage of Smithfield. In total, New Kent registered 22 kills along with 17 aces to overwhelm Smithfield and claim the Bay Rivers District victory.

New Kent head coach Cynthia Burnett provided an explanation on her team’s improvement throughout the season to date.

“Tonight and our last game were confidence builders,” she said. “We wanted to be more consistent and have less errors.

“There was less pressure tonight,” Burnett continued. “We felt that we were the better team. Now, it’s about keeping the momentum going and seeing it carry over.”
