New Kent wins 3A Region A cross-country meet; Lady Trojans finish as runners-up

New Kent boys’ cross-country team emerged as winners of the Group 3A Region A Championship meet ran at Bells Mill Park on Nov. 1.

Patrick Johnson emerged as the overall winner with a time of 16:52.58, easing his way to victory by more than 15 seconds. Teammates Gabriel Bollhorst (18:20.90) and Colin Pierce (18:33.70) placed in the top ten, finishing seventh and ninth respectively. Quinn Lysek’s time of 19:15.35 (16th) and Riley Baker’s 19:25.60 (18th) rounded out the top five scorers for the Trojans. Other participants for the Trojans were Evan Lipscomb (21st-19:39.08) and Logan Broz (26th-19:50.09).

New Kent scored 51 points, beating out Bay Rivers District rivals York (60) and Tabb (76) for the win.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Trojans earned a second-place finish to earn the right to head to the state cross-country meet.

Jacqueline Clardy-Josephs paced New Kent, finishing in third with a time of 20:06.96. Natasha Lange (21:59.06) finished eighth in the overall competition. Magnolia Lang (12th-22:30.13), Kori Massey (13th-22:35.61), and Kately Gray (15th-22:37.81) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Trojans. Other finishers were Taneiya Matlock (17th-22:50.36) and Tabitha Gill (19th-22:53.44).

New Kent accumulated 50 points to finish as runner-up, edging out Bay Rivers District opponent York (53) for second. Tabb cruised to the win with 19 points.

Both teams will participate in the Group 3A meet on the Great Meadow course on Nov. 9.
