What started out as a competitive game between New Kent’s Lady Trojans and the Bay Rivers District favorite Jamestown Lady Eagles quickly turned into a runaway contest for the visitors.

Jamestown remained undefeated by using a suffocating defense to defeat New Kent 71-44 in the Dec. 6 contest.

The Lady Eagles strung together the first six baskets in the paint to jump out early on New Kent. However, Lady Trojan Bailee Hellebrant’s three-pointer brought the team within three (12-9) midway through the opening frame. But the visitors put together a 9-4 run to close the first quarter to take a 21-13 advantage into the second quarter.

New Kent had issues with Jamestown’s Corynthian Williams. The post player scored 15 points in the first half, nearly outscoring the Lady Trojans by herself as the hosts were down 39-17 at the break. From there, Jamestown’s consistent play on both sides along with the lethargic efforts by New Kent proved to be the deciding factor in the contest.

New Kent Lady Trojan head coach Neko Burson kept things in perspective after the defeat.

“They put ball pressure on us and we didn’t really execute the way we wanted,” he said. “Most of our shots were uncomfortable tonight.

“We got the ball over half-court but there was no execution and we just didn’t take care of our possessions,” Burson concluded.

Haley Hyndshaw’s 18 was the high mark for the Lady Trojans, who drop to a 2-2 record. Natasha Lange pumped in 12, Hellebrant and Alaina Torres both pitched in with five, and Madison Foley rounded up the scoring with four.
