First NKHS Hall of Fame class inductees

Ed Allen Jr. (left) and Joan Hudson Lawter (right) are honored as the first inductees of New Kent High School’s Hall of Fame during a Friday night ceremony prior to the boys’ basketball game against Lafayette. Allen taught and coached at New Kent for 42 years, being named as Virginia High School League’s Athletic Director of the Year in 1992 and 2000, along with winning the VHSL Boys’ Basketball State Championship in 2000, racking up 531 wins and an induction into the Virginia High School League’s Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004. Hudson also coached and taught for 42 years in the New Kent school system, wining the Walt Cormack Award in 1984 and notching an unprecedented six Virginia High School League Outdoor Track and Field Championships (1982-86, 1999). She has been named VHSL State Track Coach of the Year four times and was inducted into the VHSL Coaches Hall of Fame in 1996.
