New Kent’s girls’ basketball performance on the year have been average at best. But an affair against the visiting York Lady Falcons on Senior Night provided the team a positive lift to close out their home slate.

Capitalizing on York’s inability to sink free throws, New Kent managed a 37-29 win in the Feb. 4 affair on Senior Night.

Both teams turned the ball over on nearly every possession in the first quarter. York managed to pull ahead 6-4 after Lady Falcon Taylor Harris converted a lay-up to finish the frame. But that lead would be the visitors only one in the game. New Kent outscored York 9-2 in the next frame and held a 13-8 lead at the intermission break.

The Lady Trojans picked up the pace in the third quarter, doubling up York 12-6 on the scoreboard in the third to maintain the lead. But for the Lady Trojans, making 12 of 23 free throws while York failed to convert any of their six attempts proved to provide enough distance for the hosts to claim the win.

After the game, Lady Trojan head coach Neko Burson spoke highly about his senior class leaving the program.

“They fought hard and it’s tough to see them go,” he said of the quartet of Madiosn Courtney, Abbey Coutu, Jada Hooker, and Alaina Torres. “I told them to go out and have fun tonight.

“I also want to shout out Nia Darrisaw, the number one manager that has been instrumental in helping with everything we do here,” Burson added, speaking about her orchestration of the team in day-to-day activities. “This is an extra special class and it’s been a great four years.”

Torres’ 11 points led New Kent (7-14) in the scoring column. Bailee Hellebrandt and Haley Hyndshaw scored eight, Madison Foley added six, Natasha Lange tossed in two, and Coutu and Hooker chipped in with one apiece.
