New Kent’s girls, boys settle for second at seventh annual Shoot the Gun and Run Invitational

Despite garnering wins in six events, New Kent’s Lady Trojans had to settle for second place at the seventh annual Shoot the Gun and Run Track Invitational on Saturday.

The hosting Lady Trojans scored 146.5 points at the meet, finishing a mere 1.5 points behind Bay Rivers foe Tabb who won the meet with 148 points. Another district rival, York, finished third with 107 points. Neighboring Charles City High School garnered 10 points for a tenth-place finish.

New Kent’s Melissa Spangler emerged as a double event winner at the meet, winning the girls’ long and triple jumps with leaps of 15’9” and 33’10” respectively. Other winners for the Lady Trojans included Queen Frazier in the 400-meter dash (1:04.17), Norah Murray in the 100-meter hurdles (18.34), Taneiya Matlock in the girls’ high jump (4’6”), and the girls’ 4×400 meter relay team.

In the boys’ competition, New Kent finished as the runner-up with 86 points as district foe Tabb ran away from the competition with 134 points. Peninsula Catholic rounded out the top three by accumulating 87 points, while Charles City finished in tenth-place with 11 points.

The Trojans team earned first place in three events, with Patrick Johnson claiming the 800-meter run (2:08.52), Caleb Curry winning the high jump (5’10”) and Will Tolley taking gold in the pole vault with a clearance of 13’6”.
