Harsh conditions and cool temperatures couldn’t deter New Kent’s Lady Trojans fiery scoring outburst as part of their home debut Monday night.

Powered by a hat trick by Lady Trojan Taylor Clements, the hosts lit up the scoreboard, scoring eight goals and pitching a shutout against the visiting Lady Blue Devils of Varina in the soccer home opener.

Barely two minutes into the contest, New Kent’s Mea Picone quickly found the back of the goal. Three minutes later, teammate Grace Lysek slashed through the Varina defense to put another point on the scoreboard. Clements two goals at the end of the half provided the hosts a 4-0 lead at the intermission break. Clements added her third goal after the break, completing the hat trick as New Kent added four more goals in the second half to close out the contest.

After the contest, Lady Trojan head coach Steve Grech talked about being aggressive on the offensive end.

“We had 35 shots on goal today and that’s how you’re going to score goals,” he said. “The team hustled and when we lost the ball, the players went after it.

“We now have a huge game on Thursday against Colonial Heights,” Grech continued. “If we can carry this [momentum] over and do that also against West Point, that will get us points.
