Behind state qualifying times in hurdle events by Laina Brown and Skye Bradby, Charles City’s Lady Panthers earned a third-place finish at the Tidewater District Championships held at their home stadium on May 15.

Brown’s time of 18.06 in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles not only clinched an automatic state berth, but also won the event for her. For Bradby, her 52.52 in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles was good enough for second.

The Lady Panthers scored 76 points, finishing in third place behind district championship winner West Point (197) and runner-up Middlesex (146). King William (53), Mathews (26), and King & Queen (8) rounded out the scoring on the girls’ side.

For the boys, Charles City put together a 41-point performance to finish sixth in the district championships.
King William (126.5) edged out Mathews (125) for the team title. Middlesex (95.5), West Point (80), and Carver Academy (51) all finished ahead of the Panthers, while King & Queen (18) rounded out the scoring.

Both teams will participate in the Group 1A Region A championship meet on May 23.
