Lady Trojans open season with thrilling 3-2 victory in sudden death shootout
New Lady Trojan field hockey coach Cristen Sickal entered her new role in an Aug. 29 home opening contest hosted by New Kent as the visiting Monticello Lady Mustangs entered the Ed Allen Complex. Needless to say, Sickal’s debut featured all the dramatics possible for her Lady Trojans.
After 60 minutes of regulation and an overtime period that resulted in a 2-2 tie, it was the hosts winning a 3-0 shootout to defeat Monticello in the contest.
With an even balance of action throughout the night, it would be Lady Trojan goalie Abby Lindsey stepping up during the shootout period. The junior goaltender batted away three shot attempts by Monticello players to keep them off the board in the sudden death period. Meanwhile, Lady Trojans Bella Focht, Haylie Bayens, and Peyton Lilley each connected with the back of the net doing their shot attempts providing enough distance and a 3-2 victory for the hosts.
Sickal spoke about the results of the opening home contest and the intensity of the matchup.
“Initially in the second half, things were rusty,” she commented. “Then we got our second goal and from there, I couldn’t have asked the girls to play any better.
“When it came to the shootout, it was definitely the most intense game that I have coached or played or anything,” Sickal added. “I’m super proud of them with us getting all three goals of the bat and all the saves right off the bat so our goalie and shooters did great.”
New Kent remains undefeated with a 2-0 record on the season.
