Dealing with the turmoil of injuries and line-up shuffles, New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ volleyball team looked to turn around a less than stellar first half of the season to become contenders in the Bay Rivers District. An Oct. 3 matchup against Bruton’s Lady Panthers seemed to kickoff that campaign.

New Kent cruised 25-15, 25-14, 25-14 to defeat Bruton in the Bay Rivers District affair, upping their record to 10-6.

Leading 20-14 in the first set, New Kent’s Logan McKenney’s serves help set up teammate Jaiden McCoy, who converted aces on three consecutive spikes. Aided by an error by Bruton’s Karena Glass, New Kent closed the door on set one.

Set two saw McCoy lead a charge behind her serving. With the score tied at 10 apiece, she catapulted an 8-0 run that allowed the host to take the lead. Accompanying her were the returns of Haley Hyndshaw and Haley Baker, who have been out over the last few games. The leadership from the veterans provided the spark to help the hosts claim sets two and three, ultimately taking the match.

New Kent head coach Cynthia Burnett said the return of Hyndshaw and Baker helped with the confidence and poise of her young team.

“We finally got a feel with everyone healthy tonight,” she said. “We were hitting our shots and it was difficult for them to recover.

“We made mistakes as well,” Burnett continued. “Going forward against better teams, you have to be better as we get into this second half of the season.”
