In an effort to make another appearance in the Group 3A playoffs, New Kent’s Trojans would essentially have to run the gauntlet of opponents and pull out wins over the next four weeks. That number is now down to three.

New Kent’s defense held firm as they shutout the visiting Grafton Clippers 17-0 to highlight homecoming festivities Friday night.

On the second drive of the night for the Trojans, Jamie Jones’ 24-yard run carried the hosts down to the 10-yard line. From there, Trojan back Joey Campbell took a direct snap into the end zone with a minute to spare in the first quarter to up New Kent’s advantage to 7-0.

Grafton’s miscues proved to be key assistance to the Trojans, as the visitors saw a long pass play negated by a holding penalty. Forced to punt back to New Kent, the Trojans marched down the field 80 yards on the next drive, capped off by Adam Cable’s four-yard tote with 3:29 remaining in the half.

New Kent’s secondary received a break after what appeared to be a 45-yard touchdown score on a pass to Isaiah Smith was negated due to a chop block.

The Trojans fought off the last attempt by Grafton to score in the remainder of the contest. Luke Broze’s 25-yard field goal provided the final margin as the hosts celebrated the victory.

New Kent improved its record to 3-4 on the season.
