With the regular season behind them, New Kent’s Lady Trojans geared up Monday night for their Group 3A Region A opening round volleyball contest against the visiting I.C. Norcom Lady Greyhounds. The match proved to be a positive stepping stone for the hosts.

New Kent dominated 25-10, 25-6, 25-8 in the contest, setting the Lady Trojans up for a trip to Southampton to take on the Lady Indians.

Statistically, the Lady Trojans struggled, especially in the digs department. But the aggressiveness by the hosts made returning the ball over the net by the Lady Greyhounds difficult. New Kent teammates Aubrey Hyndshaw and Haley Baker each accounted for eight aces apiece, as the team racked up 36 in total. From there, the hosts had no problem downing the team from Norfolk.

After the contest, New Kent head coach Cynthia Burnett talked about facing Southampton, a team they defeated in their invitational tournament approximately one month ago.

“I am expecting it to be a lot tougher than tonight,” she said. “They are a competent team and they play on set-hit volleyball.

“I’m anticipating that they have improved since the last time we saw them,” Burnett continued. “We need to take the game extremely serious and step up to the plate and do what we need to do.”
