New Kent High School boys finish fourth, girls fifth in swimming at regional meet

New Kent High School’s swim teams both earned top five finishes in the Group 3A Region A championships held on Friday, Feb. 7.

New Kent’s boys’ team earned a fourth-place finish at the meet, while the Lady Trojans swam to a fifth- place finish. Three individual boys and two boys’ relay teams will represent New Kent at the Group 3A state championships on Feb. 21 at Swim RVA in Richmond.

Representing the 200-medley relay at the state meet are Kevin Kurek, Gavin Weterhington, Blake Newton, and Logan Adkins. Ian Durkee will join Kurek, Weterhington, and Atkins as part of the 200-meter freestyle relay.

Atkins (53.24 in the 100-meter freestyle), Wetherington (1:03.97 in the 100-meter backstroke), and Newton (1:17.59 in the 100-meter breaststroke) all finished fourth in regional competition and will swim in those respective event at the state level.
