New Kent Lady Trojans win 3A Region A indoor championship

Powered by a sweep in the jumping events from senior Raven Harris, New Kent’s Lady Trojans indoor track and field team emerged as winners of the Group 3A Region A championship held Saturday at the Boo Williams Complex in Hampton.

New Kent accumulated 122.5 points to win the meet. Bay Rivers District rivals Tabb (104.5) and York (80) finished in second and third, respectively.

Harris won the girls’ triple jump (36’0¼”), girls’ high jump (4’10”), and girls’ long jump (16’7”). She also accompanied Melissa Spangler, Queen Frazier, and Norah Murray on the 4×200 meter relay team, finishing sixth in the event.

On the boys’ side, New Kent turned in a performance of 57.5 points, good enough for a fifth-place finish at the meet.

Patrick Johnson finished as the winner of the boys’ 1000-meter and 1600-meter run with a time of 2:43.55 and 4:35.80 respectively, edging out Lafayette’s Brenner Beard in both events.

New Kent will participate in the Group 3A indoor state track and field championships on Mar. 2-3 in Lynchburg.
