New Kent boys’ indoor track finishes 10th in state competition

New Kent High School’s boys’ indoor track and field team finished 10th in the Group 3A State Track and Field championships held Mar. 2 at Liberty University.

The boys’ team compiled 22 points to finish in the top ten. Monticello claimed the boys’ title with 57 points.

Ellis Branch earned the bronze medal in the boys’ high jump with a clearance of 5’10”. Wade Grubbs heaved the shot 41’2”, placing sixth in the event.

Roy Kegley placed eighth in the boys’ 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.06 and the boys’ high jump with a clearance of 5’6”.

Isaac Barber leaped 40’2¼ in the boys’ triple jump, finishing fifth in the event. He followed that up with a distance of 19’6¾” in the boys’ long jump, good for seventh place. Teammate Aaron Walker jumped 38’0” in the triple jump to finish eighth.

Grubbs, Parker Hinks, Joseph Campbell, and Roy Kegley orchestrated a time of 3:47.92, good enough for sixth in the boys’ 4×400 meter relay. New Kent’s 4×200 relay team of Grubbs, Walker, Campbell, and Barber finished eighth in the event with a time of 1:38.06.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Trojans pulled together 18 points, good enough to finish 11th at the state championship meet. Western Albermarle ran away from the competition with 110 points to claim the state championship.

Julia Hathaway earned a bronze medal in the girls’ triple jump with a mark of 35’8½”. Norrah Murray earned a point for the Lady Trojans with a time of 10.43 in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles, good enough for eighth place. Amy Rudolph also notched a point by clearing 8’0” in the girls’ pole vault.

Sierrah Matthews accumulated the most points for the Lady Trojans. She ran a time of 43.37 in the girls’ 300-meter dash, finishing fifth in the event. She also finished sixth in the girls’ 55-meter dash (7.56) and seventh in the girls’ 500-meter dash by running 1:24.55.
