New Kent Lady Trojans sweep Lafayette to conclude regular season
One game removed from celebrating New Kent Lady Trojans head volleyball coach Cynthia Burnett’s 500th career win, it was on to adding to that total in Apr. 1 matchup against the visiting Lafayette Lady Rams.
New Kent cruised to a 25-17, 25-15, 25-18 sweep of Lafayette en route to closing out the volleyball regular season.
After falling behind early in set one, New Kent’s Jaiden McCoy’s spike and score started to push the hosts in the right direction. Aubrey Hyndshaw’s kill along with McCoy stuffing Lafayette’s scoring attempts at the net led to seven unanswered points that lifted the hosts to winning the opening frame.
Lafayette relied on Elena Soboleva in the second set, as her two aces provided a temporary 8-7 lead over the Lady Trojans. With the game exchanging scores and remaining tied at 13 apiece, New Kent constructed a 12-2 run to down the visitors in the second frame.
Both teams played evenly for more of the third stanza, with the score knotted at 14 apiece. But the Lady Trojans’ defense elevated their offensive play, leading to an 11-4 run capped off by a kill from Julia Hathaway to claim the match.
New Kent concludes the regular season with an 8-2 record and will participate in the Group 3A Region A tournament quarterfinals on Apr. 12.
