Sometimes it takes an error to provide that additional motivation for a team’s success. Such was the case during Friday afternoon’s game for the New Kent Trojans.

Deeming what they figured was a missed called in the top of the sixth inning, New Kent pushed across seven runs in the bottom of the frame to rout the visiting York Falcons 10-4.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, New Kent’s Nick Wiles’ triple brought home a run for the hosts. A subsequent sacrifice fly allowed Wiles to cross home plate and cut the deficit to one (4-3) by the end of the inning.

In the top of the sixth inning and with two outs, a routine throw and snag by first baseman Nick Redman appeared to be enough to end the portion of the frame. But the umpire deemed the York runner safe, setting off the players and coaches about the alleged blown call.

It would be New Kent’s bats that would take the measure of exacting revenge. New Kent went to work with consistent hits, scoring multiple runs to cross the plate. Even after a York pitching change, more scores occurred as part of the rally at the bottom half of the sixth. Galvin Richardson closed out the game in the top of the seventh to allow the hosts to remain undefeated.

Trevor Ronan, who is in his first year as the head coach for New Kent, talked about his team’s ability to stay resilient.

“I think the missed call fired them up,” he commented on the controversial play. “Everybody likes being a team and it works out really good when these boys play together.

“They are hard to beat and that is what I preach,” Ronan continued. “When we gel together, we’re going to play well together, and you can see that in the outcome of the game today.”

New Kent improves to 4-0.
