New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ softball team may have lost a season, but they haven’t lost a step.

The hosting Lady Trojans dominated the visiting York Lady Falcons 12-2 in Friday afternoon’s Bay Rivers District contest.

Early on, York gave the home team a scare by placing runners in scoring position. But New Kent pitcher Gracie Ellis notched clutch strikeouts to escape without any damage done.

Meanwhile, the Lady Trojans bats went to work as Haley Baker’s triple allowed her to eventually score in the first inning. In the second and third innings, the hosts pushed across three runs in each of those innings and an additional four runs in the fourth. One final score in the bottom of the fifth ended the contest via mercy rule.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Maria Bates talked about their solid performance.

“We have had only three games so far and when they got a runner on third, we did good work under pressure,” she said. “We also told the girls before the game that we needed to jump on them early. We have not been doing that.

“I was also very satisfied with the base running,” Bates continued. “We have kind of hammered that in during practice this week because those mental errors will cost us down the line. We needed to be aggressive on the base pads as much as we can, and they did that today.”

New Kent remains undefeated with a record of 3-0.
