Sometimes, winning a softball game is as simple as scoring more runs than the opponent. But when stellar defense accompanies a perfect pitching performance, it makes the contest a lot easier.
New Kent Lady Trojan Gracie Ellis hurled a perfect game with 11 strikeouts as the hosts defeated the visiting Lafayette Lady Rams 10-0 in the May 19 Bay Rivers contest.
Despite the outcome, New Kent’s bats continued to struggle early in the opening innings. After only leading 1-0 after the first two innings, the hosts strung together four runs in the third and five in the fourth open the gap up to 10-0. From there, Ellis’ achievement on the mound along with solid defense easily sealed the win.
New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Maria Bates spoke about her team’s defense in the win.
“Offense and hitting are great, but defense wins championships,” she commented. “The perfect game is a huge feat.
“For her [Ellis] to have no walks, no errors, and no hits, she had a great outing this year,” Bates continued. “She’s keeping hitters on their toes and she studies the game. She has developed so well, especially mentally. The entire package is there.”
New Kent remains undefeated with a record of 5-0.
