Wootton Asset wins Virginia Derby

Above, Wootton Asset (6) outduels Slicked (4) to win the $250,000 Virginia Derby sponsored by New Kent County during Tuesday afternoon’s race at Colonial Downs. The race, conducted on the one and one-eighth mile Secretariat Turf Course, highlights the race season as it contains the largest purse in one individual event this year. Below, jockey Jose L. Ortiz and Wootton Asset are escorted to the winner’s circle. At bottom, and in the winners’ circle, are members of Madaket Stables LLC who owns the horse along with New Kent County supervisors and representatives of Colonial Downs. Wootton Asset was trained by H. Graham Motion.
