A Sept. 30 matchup against the Bruton Lady Panthers had one message that New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ volleyball team wanted to send: Do not let up.
The message was delivered loud and clear as the hosting Lady Trojans cruised in straight sets 25-6, 25-7, 25-11 in the Bay Rivers District affair.
New Kent opened the first set with ease, overpowering the visitors with their serves. In the second set after a slow start, Lady Trojan Julia Hathaway delivered a kill to spark a 21-4 run that was highlighted by six aces. The third set followed suit as New Kent jumped out to a 10-1 advantage and coasted the rest of the way for the triumph.
After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans head coach Cynthia Burnett talked about her goals to continue to instill confidence in her team.
“We are trying to show the girls that we are the team and that we are here to dominate and play New Kent ball,” she said. “We want to get everyone in the game and still not take opponents lightly.
“Our serving tonight was good, and you just cannot beat that when we’re on,” Burnett added. “Every time I called a serve, they went at that girl over and over again.”
New Kent improves its record to 13-2 on the year.
