Senior Night is always special for any high school athlete as it recognizes their achievements with a program. And while New Kent High School’s Lady Trojans field hockey squad has had a tough time this season, Monday night provided an additional reason to celebrate.

New Kent held the visiting Northumberland Lady Indians scoreless en route to a 4-0 victory to cap off a successful Senior Night victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, New Kent was able to find the back of the net in the next frame. A converted penalty corner by Isabella Vafiadis notched the first point on the night for the hosts with 3:56 remaining until halftime. Less than two minutes later, Katherine Fly added a penalty corner conversion of her own to double the lead for the hosts (2-0).

New Kent continued their offensive attack after the intermission break. Leah Hamilton converted the hosts next goal with 5:10 remaining in the third quarter. The final Lady Trojan score came at the beginning of the fourth as Jordan Lilley punched one in. Meanwhile, Senior goalie Sadie Call only needed a few stops to help New Kent maintain the shutout.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans head coach Cristen Sickal talked about the ups and downs of the season.

“I liked the energy that we displayed tonight,” she commented. “It’s been a very hard season, so it was good to see the girls have fun with it tonight.

“We still have a lot to work on,” Sickal added. “We will keep pushing this season as it goes and get ready for next season.”

New Kent, now with a record of 3-10, has four seniors on this year’s squad.
