New Kent High School’s wrestling program accumulated wins Tuesday afternoon over Bay Rivers District foes York and Lafayette in the home tri-meet.
New Kent outscored York 62-18 and Lafayette 53-12 to breeze to the win.
“It was a great team effort,” said first-year Head Coach John Goodbody. “We have a lot of younger guys in the lineup which was kind of fun. This gave an opportunity for them to get into the lineup and kind of battle a little bit.”
The Trojan coach elected to rest a few wrestlers who had grappled the previous weekend at the Walsh Jesuit High School Invitational in Ohio. Among them were Domonic Baker, who finished third at that event. Teammate Nicholas Vafiadis picked up a sixth-place finish in one of the top tournaments in the country elected to compete during the Bay Rivers District meet.
As for Tuesday’s match, Goodbody says the future continues to be bright for the Trojans.
“I see a lot of things to work on, especially for those young guys,” he said in conclusion. “Overall, this group of seniors we have are special and they only have a handful of times left to compete in this gym, so it was kind of fun to see them wrestle tonight.”
