New Kent’s Lady Trojans are looking to get back to their winning ways after claiming the Group 3A Region A title last year. A Tuesday night matchup against the York Lady Falcons proved to contribute to some positive momentum in that quest.

New Kent’s offense outpouring along with a solid defensive effort was enough for them to cruise to a 61-34 victory over York in the Bay Rivers District game.

The hosts got off to a hot scoring start behind Jakeira Thomas. A three-pointer plus another easy score assisted in New Kent holding a 10-point lead after the first quarter (17-7). In the second quarter, it was teammates Hannah Drewer and McKenna Mueller providing baskets from behind the arc that contributed to the scoring. Meanwhile, McCoy and Katelyn Norman providing defensive and rebounding prowess for the Lady Trojans, making every shot attempt tough for the much smaller Lady Falcons. That tough play traversed the second half, with the lead ballooning to as much as 30 before the team eventually settled with their comfortable win.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Neko Burson talked about his team’s focus in the game.

“Their effort speaks to my confidence in all of our players,” he said. “I let them know that we are going to need them. I expect the same effort from my bench as my starters.

“When we are on and on the same page moving as one unit, it’s hard to score on us,” Burson continued. “When we crash the boards and limit teams to one shot per possession, that’s love. I was very impressed with our effort tonight.”

New Kent (9-4) got double digit scoring from Mueller (20) and Norman (17). McCoy tossed in eight, Thomas scored five, Aubrey Hyndshaw pumped in four, Drewer added three, and the duo of Campbell Proffitt and Darian Mason chipped in with two apiece.
