New Kent High School grapplers claim fifth consecutive regional championship

If New Kent High School wrestling’s team used Saturday’s showing in the Group 3A Region A Championships as a prelude, then their appearance at the Group 3A State Championships may return to them for a fourth year in a row.
Producing 10 regional champions and two regional runners-up, New Kent High School’s Trojans cruised to its fifth consecutive regional championship on Feb. 12.
New Kent regional champions were Samuel Stamper (106-Technical Fall over Isabel Caulford of Lafayette), Daniel Colgin (113- Technical Fall over Zoahaniah Hardman of Phoebus), Kyle Gibson (120- Pinfall over Roman Ayala of Lafayette), Matthew Eberly (126- Pinfall over Xavier Munoz of Colonial Heights), Trace Ragland (132- Pinfall over Xavier Sykes of Phoebus), Patrick Jordan (138- Pinfall over Maddox Crowe of Lake Taylor), Evan Holloway (145- Forfeit over Brooks Coleman of Lafayette), Travis Ragland (152- Pinfall over Brogan Hurt of Lafayette), Nicholas Vafiadis (160- Pinfall over Tyler Corliss of Lafayette), Domonic Baker (170- Technical Fall over Henry Daughtrey of Lakeland), Nathaniel Fly (182- Pinfall over Josh Cummings of York), and Cole Townsend (195- Major Decision over Conner Ellison of Lafayette). Regional runners-up were Nick Wiles in the 220-pound division, and Seth Bayens in the 285-pound division.
The Trojans amassed 364.5 points, easily outdistancing themselves from Bay Rivers District Rivals Lafayette (188) and Tabb (176) who finished in second and third respectively.
