After a fast start to the season, New Kent’s Lady Trojans have struggled in the final games of the season on the pitch. On Monday night, too many lapses on brought the Lady Trojans’ sent the hosts back into the wrong column.
The visiting Warhill Lady Lions spoiled Senior Night for the hosts, taking down New Kent 3-1 in the Bay Rivers District contest.
Both teams’ physical presence made for a back-and-forth game for the first 15 minutes of the contest. It wasn’t until Warhill’s Alexandra Scott snuck a ball by New Kent goalie Emily Ward to put the guests on the board. That lead would hold up by the conclusion of the first half.
In the second half, New Kent received a big break to make the game competitive. The Lady Trojans were awarded a penalty kick. Kaitlyn Drake’s attempt was thwarted by Lions’ goalkeeper Taylor Doody. But on the rebound, Drake punched it through the net to tie the game up at one apiece with 26:19 showing on the clock.
Both teams continued to battle, but New Kent’s miscues on defense resulted in Q.B. Osuna netting two goals in the latter stages of the second half. Those goals would be the difference makers in the victory for the visiting Lady Lions.
After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Steve Grech spoke about not converting on chances his team was offered.
“We had so many opportunities, especially in the first half,” he said. “We had pen nets and the girls tried to kill the ball instead of placing it in the net.
“We have to the capitalize on their mistakes, but the opposite happened,” Grech concluded.
New Kent’s Lady Trojans fall to 5-6.
