Charles City High School Fall sports return after a three-year absence

After a three-year absence, Charles City County High School will field Fall sports for the 2022-23 season.

Charles City High School Athletic Director Andre’ Jones issued a press release on Aug. 5 regarding the positive news for a community that hasn’t’ seen football or girls’ volleyball since 2019.

“This has probably been some of the best news we have had in a long time,” Jones said in the press release. “When you see student-athletes who want to revive a program, they will rally others and unite together in an effort to make that happen.”

The press release added that the students’ commitment to practices and each other were primary causes why he green-lit the programs to proceed this year. In past years, turnout for Fall sports have been relatively low. When that is coupled with Charles City High School being the eighth smallest school for grades 9-12 in Virginia according to the Average Daily Membership (ADM), that pans out to roughly 150 eligible student-athletes to participate in varsity sports.

“We are encouraging those who are interested in Fall sports, especially girls’ volleyball, to come on out and see what they can be a part of,” Jones added.

In a follow-up interview with the athletic director, he emphasized the importance of continuing programs for future years.

“Even though we are fielding teams this Fall, we are senior heavy,” Jones commented, pointing to 10 seniors on the football team and four seniors on the girls’ volleyball team. “We have so many students in this school and for athletics to continue to prosper, they have to want to give things a try.

“I know we can do a lot of great things with our athletics and activities programs,” the athletic director said as he wrapped up his comments. “We will enjoy what we have now, build to the future, and hope those students who are watching will take part in continuing the tradition of having successful athletic programs here at Charles City County High School.”

Charles City High School girls’ volleyball team opens their season with a home game on Aug. 24, 6 p.m. Charles City High School’s football team will travel to Middlesex on Friday, Aug. 26, and will have their home opener on Friday, Sept. 9 against Northumberland.
