Colonial Downs racing returns to weekends in 2023

Horse racing will return to the weekends at Colonial Downs in 2023.

The Virginia Racing Commission approved a 27-date schedule for races at the venue located in New Kent. The season will be the first for Colonial Downs since the group’s transition of ownership to Churchill Downs Incorporated.

Races will begin July 13, 2023, and run through Sept. 9, 2023, with live racing on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Post time will be at 1:30 p.m. The Virginia Derby, with a purse of $300,000, is expected to close out the season on Sept. 9, 2023.
