New Kent High School wrestlers dominate for sixth consecutive regional title

New Kent High School’s Wrestling Team clinched their sixth consecutive regional championship with a dominating performance Saturday on their own home floor.

New Kent accumulated 305.5 points, more than double than runner-up Lafayette who finished with 127.5 points, to win the Group 3A Region A championship. Bay Rivers District rival Tabb finished in third with 114 points.

Eight New Kent grapplers finished as winners of their respective weight classes. Samuel Stamper pinned Tucker Cobb of Southampton to capture the 113-pound weight division. Peyton McNamee won via pinfall in the 120-pound division via pinfall of Nathan Taylor of Hopewell. Kyle Gibson captured the 126-pound division in 20 seconds with a successful pin over Lafayette’s Caleb Gentry. Trace Ragland won the 132-pound category with a pinfall over Clay Ling from York. Matthew Eberly won in half-a-minute via pinfall over Tabb’s Zachary Sharp in the 138-pound division. Patrick Jordon captured a technical fall victory over Tabb’s Wayne Watson in the 144-pound weight class. Jason Bennett was recognized as the winner of the 150-pound weight class via a majority decision over Lafayette’s Christian Gordy. Finally, Seth Bayens won the 215-pound weight division via pinfall over Keith Melton of Petersburg.

Other scorers for New Kent include Mickel Prince (third, 106-pound class), Aiden Wilson (second, 157-pound class), Aiden Hutchinson (second, 165-pound class), Logan Greenawalt (third, 175-pound class), John Paul Fallon (second, 190-pound class), and Pedro Williamson (fourth, 285-pound class).

All 14 wrestlers from New Kent advance to the Group 3A State Championship Feb. 17-18 in Salem.
