New Kent High School wrestling finishes as state runner-up, title streak ends at four

New Kent High School's wrestling team finished as the Group 3A State runners-up after the two-day meet at Salem.

New Kent High School’s Wrestling Team saw its four-year Group 3A State Title win streak come to an end Saturday night. But the group still brought home hardware.

The Trojans totaled 155 points at the state championship meet, finishing as the runner-up in the competition. New Kent was dethroned by Staunton River, who scored 216.5 points.

New Kent had three wrestlers capture individual titles at the meet. Kyle Gibson won by decision over Staunton River’s Caiden Saavedra in the 126-pound division. Matthew Eberly scored a pinfall over Skyline’s Wyatt Bosley to win the 138-pound classification. Patrick Jordon continued his dominance, winning by pinfall over Skyline’s Joey DiVello to capture the 144-pound division and winning his second consecutive state title.

Seth Bayens finished as a runner-up for the Trojans in the 215-pound category, losing by decision to Manasses Park’s Jose Alvarez-Portillo. Other top placers for the Trojans were Trace Ragland (132 pounds- 3rd) and Samuel Stamper (113 pounds- 5th).

All 14 of New Kent wrestlers who participated in the state championship meet accumulated at least one point for the team.
